5 Simple Ways To Make Your Home Cozier In The Fall/Winter

It’s been just over a month since the start of the fall – the days are getting shorter, and we’re spending more time indoors because the cold weather is starting to creep in. While some people may think the colder months are dull and dreary, I like to look at it as a way to spend more time in my cozy sanctuary.

Cozy has a different meaning for everyone; for me, it’s feelings of comfort, relaxation, and happiness. If you want to learn how to create a warm and welcoming environment in your home, keep reading for 5 simple ways to make your home cozier so you’ll never want to leave!

Warm Up your Feet with an Area Rug

Nothing screams “it’s winter” quite like the frigid-feeling of bare feet stepping onto a cold floor. Radiant-heat floors may be on many of our dream bathroom wish lists, but a lot of us don’t have them yet. Protect your toes in the meantime by placing area rugs in high traffic spots in the home, like your bedroom, living room, or even your bathroom!

My favorite places to scope out a good deal on area rugs are sites like Wayfair and rugs.com, but you may find some hidden gems at tag sales, consignments shops, and other second-hand markets.

Blankets + Throws

Snuggle under the covers with a blanket or throw – especially ones made with cotton, cashmere, wool, faux fur, or my favorite, cable knit. Stash your blankets all around the house so you can quickly wrap up whenever you get chilly. You can keep them in wicker baskets near the couch or drape them over a blanket ladder.  Not sure how to throw a throw, as you see on Pinterest or Instagram? Light the Place Up

Add instant warmth and cozy vibes with soft lighting! Whether you opt for candles or twinkle lights, warm, ambient lighting is a perfect way to add the right amount of cozy glow to your home. You can place these fairy lights in assorted jars or pick up some of your favorite scented candles at a nearby store. If you love a good DIY project, you can try making candles at home. You can choose your scent, save money, and get creative with the jar that you use!

Create a Reading Nook

As it continues getting darker earlier, it’s easy to fall into a rabbit hole of endless Netflix binging. There are so many other great ways to enjoy your downtime, like curling up with a favorite book, magazine, or kindle!

Choose an under-utilized corner of your home and add some pillows, the throw blankets, and comfortable lighting mentioned above, and get lost in your favorite book! The best part is, creating a spot to unwind doesn’t require all that much space! The Family Handyman gives some awesome tips on how to make a relaxing reading nook with limited space

Bonus coziness factor: Make a cup of homemade hot cocoa to sip on while you snuggle up with your favorite book.

Add Photos of Warm Memories

In the winter, we lose the human connection that we often take for granted in the warmer months, and the quickness at which cold weather and darker afternoons roll in can shock us. With COVID continuing to be a factor, it makes it even harder to connect with those that you love. Counterbalance the lack of human interaction with plenty of photos throughout your home of your favorite memories. Placing photos of friends and loved ones, especially photos taken in warmer weather, is a great way to remind yourself that winter will end, and will help you shake those winter blues!

Know you need to cozy-up your space but not quite sure where to start? I’d love to help work with the space you have or help you find a bigger space with more opportunities to create coziness for you to call home. Call, text, email – my door is always open!
